Pembroke Flying Field Activity - 2012

The projects or activities that follow were reviewed at the February 11th Board meeting and efforts will begin moving forward as club resources and weather conditions allow.

The Flying Field - North of the orange safety fence - facilitated by Mike Charles

A team of Joe Bak, Tom Bunk, Mike Charles, Gary Pfender, Dick Pratt and Bob O'Brien was formed to plan, evaluate and implement improvements to the flying field North of the safety fence, that resulted in the following.
  • Develop and improve the Safety area on the North side of the orange safety fence that includes moving the setup benches North of the orange safety fence, moving the flight ready benches North (to where the original pilot blocks are located), and installing new pilot standing blocks in front of the new pilot standing blocks location.  This will move operations away from the vehicle driving path, the Shelter and Storage Shed, and focus flying on the proposed 100' by 400' runway location. The four white bricks identifying the proposed 100' by 400' runway bricks will be moved such that the South edge of the runway will be around 18' from the new pilot standing blocks location.  A digital dBmeter will be located at the flying field to permit refinements to noise measurements of member aircraft, and also overflights by full scale aircraft of our model flying field.  Tom Bunk as the lead person on this project assisted by Andy Stockschlaeder.
  • Purchase a second Cub Cadet riding mower, just like the one we have with a 54" mowing deck. Sell or dispose of the two older mowers. Use just two Cub Cadets in 2012.  Al Westerman as the lead person.
  • Sell the Ford tractor and brush hog and use any proceeds to help pay for the new Cub Cadet. Ben Miles' brother in-law (Ray) brush hogs, or cuts, the field surrounding the flying field so we no longer need the tractor and brush hog. We are using our riding mowers to keep all the "grass" cut that use less gasoline than the Ford tractor and eliminates a major maintenance item.  Al Westerman as the lead person.
  • Move the fill that Joe Bak has to the field in early Spring, use the fill and top soil piles at the field to fill a couple of low spots to help flatten the newly identified 100' by 400' flying strip. Joe Bak as the lead person on this project.
  • Set up the mowing teams for 2012, an equipment maintenance team, a roller team and a weedwacker team to maintain the flying field for 2012. Mike Charles as the lead person with six other associate lead persons. Will survey six teams in early Spring to verify staffing. Team leaders are Fred Large, Joe LoVecchio, Gerry Fleischman, Dick Pratt, Al Westerman and Steve Miller.
  • Cut the East hedgerow in late October or early November, along with trimming the North hedgerow where the metal wind sock is located. Consider other methods and costs to keep the hedge row down. Gary Pfender as the lead person on this project assisted by Fred Large.
  • Maintain the existing signage at the club property. Minor tasks are anticipated to maintain the existing signage at the flying field. Mike Charles as the lead person on this project.
  • Determine how to possibly further flatten the flying strip after Joe Bak completes Spring 2012 soil movement. Our team is looking for ideas to discuss as they arise to determine what future enhancements to the flying strip might be, costs and potential funding resources. No lead person at this time. Project that may need some sort of grant request. Forward your ideas to any team member.
We anticipate that club members will help staff our efforts in addition to ourselves. We have had great success in this in prior years and encourge everyone to contact the lead persons noted above to offer assistance.

The Flying Field - South of the orange safety fence facilitated by Frank Dalfonso

A number of new and ongoing efforts, or possible projects, were discussed at the February 11, 2012 Board meeting.

  • Maintain the Port-a-John located at the field.  Frank Dalfonso as the lead person.
  • Address any follow-up items with completion of the new Shelter including staining, possible sidewalls and related items.  Review any associated approvals needs with the Town of Pembroke.  Frank Dalfonso as the lead person.
  • Coordinate the Spring, Summer and Fall field event schedule planned for 2012.  Frank Dalfonso as the lead person assisted by Joe Bak, Tom Bunk, George Hendel and other volunteers.
  • Maintain picnic tables with vinyl covers and stain, maintain and stain as needed existing structures at the field, or repair them, prior to construction of the new shelter in 2011.  No lead person at this time.
  • Assess putting gravel on the access roadway from Knapp Road to just past the curve to avoid the muddy conditions that occur during the late Fall, Winter and early Spring months.  No lead person at this time.
  • Other ideas or enhancements to the area South of the orange safety fence should be directed to Frank Dalfonso.
We are looking for member volunteers to lead or work on the activities South of the orange safety fence.  Contact Frank Dalfonso to share your interest.
